The Critical Communication and Media Studies program empowers students to become ethical, inclusive, critical-thinking problem solvers and social justice leaders in our complex society.
The Critical Communication and Media Studies program combines rhetoric, media studies and popular culture to examine privilege and oppression – to change the world for the better. Students analyze mediated messages and consider who the messages work for and against with a focus on racism, gender, and sexuality. The department is proud to be home for study abroad programs, film festivals, and local events with national groups and authors, all of which are made possible by your support.
Critical Communication & Media Studies majors go on to graduate school, law school and work in a variety of professions including non-profits. More and more employers are looking for students who can speak the language of diversity in a more diverse workplace.
The program is also home to The Butler University Speaker’s Lab, a co-curricular resource that helps students on both sides of the desk. The Speaker’s Lab employs highly trained student tutors to give one-on-one help with the creation and delivery of both individual and group speeches or presentations. This program embodies the phrase, “Dawgs Helping Dawgs.”
