Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences

SLHS prepares students to succeed in graduate school and careers in speech, language, and hearing, in part because of your generosity and commitment to our classrooms, clinics, and research experiences.

Our active community thrives with engaged students who learn from and serve real clients throughout their time at Butler. Our students participate in cutting-edge research opportunities with faculty and unmatched clinical practicum opportunities, including:

  • Speech and Language Clinic
  • Community speech, language, and hearing screenings
  • Butler Early Learning and Literacy (BELL) preschool program
  • Audiology Clinic
  • Butler Aphasia Community

These diverse experiences are unique for undergraduate programs in the country and contribute to our 100% graduate school acceptance rate for students who have applied over the past several years.

Help us carry forward the legacy of our retiring SLHS heroes, Dr. Mary Gospel & Prof. Ann Bilodeau:

Gifts to the Butler Aphasia Community in honor of Dr. Mary Gospel

Dr. Mary Gospel has served in the Butler SLHS department for 25 years, in roles ranging from adjunct to department chair. Widely recognized for her excellence in teaching and mentorship, Dr. Gospel consistently receives outstanding student evaluations and has earned numerous honors, including Butler’s Outstanding Professor of the Year Award and the Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching. She founded and continues to run the Butler Aphasia Community, which is a program where SLHS students work with adults with aphasia, a language disorder following a neurological event like a stroke.  She has coached hundreds of students through their first clinical experience with adult clients and shaped the lives of people with aphasia in Indiana and beyond. Gifts to this fund will be used to ensure Dr. Mary Gospel’s legacy continues forward through the Butler Aphasia Community.

Gifts to the Speech and Language Clinic in honor of Prof. Ann Bilodeau

Professor Ann Bilodeau has served as Clinical Director of the Butler Speech and Language Clinic for the last 14 years, where her leadership has been central to providing high-impact clinical experiences and to the program’s sustained record of exceptional graduate school placement for students. She teaches core clinical coursework, mentors students extensively in the clinic, and oversees community-based speech, language, and hearing screening programs that serve both children and adults in the Indianapolis area. Ann founded the Social-Pragmatic Action and Collaboration (SPEAC) workgroup to support students with social-pragmatic communication needs, led concussion awareness initiatives for students, and has served in shared governance through the Faculty Senate. Gifts to this fund will be used to ensure Ann Bilodeau’s legacy continues through the SLHS Clinic Fund.
