Department of Theatre
Theatre for all stages

Butler Theatre majors are performers, designers, and builders. They take time, space, people, and ideas to create amazing experiences. They participate in internships around the country, study abroad opportunities around the world, and learn on-campus from our wonderful faculty and from visiting international theatre artists.

Our students explore a variety of classes in theatre and dive deeper into specialized areas of theatre. We offer the BFA in Acting which provides rigorous training in performance. Unique to our BFA: once students are admitted to our department, they select whether they will undertake the BFA or the BA, and they are free to move between these two programs during their time at Butler. Additionally, students can select one or more of our six areas of emphasis which can be added to the BFA or our BA in Theatre: acting, stage management, directing, set and lighting design/technical theatre, costume design/technical theatre, and music theatre. And new this year: with our colleagues in the College Education, we are launching a middle/high school Theatre Licensure degree!

This comprehensive training allows students to gain transferable and marketable skills, which prepare them for successful careers. Our alumni work in theatre and film across the US and abroad. They also enjoy careers in law, business, education, and more!

Your gift can help support the following areas:

1. Mainstage production costs. In order for our productions to be valuable educational experiences for our students and dynamic experiences for our audiences, we are always seeking donations to help with the ever-rising costs of lumber, steel, paint, and fabric.

2. Connecting our students with guest artists who serve as teachers, designers, technicians, and directors for our productions and in our classrooms. These artists assist our full-time faculty and staff in valuable ways, and we love the in-flux of their creativity.

3. Our wonderful Butler Theatre faculty and staff lead and attend workshops and conferences across the country and around the world. They return to Butler infused with new ideas to share with our students, and we want to support these opportunities that enrich us all.

Thank you for your support!
